MILAN -- In one of the most dramatic matches of the CEV Champions League Volley 2026 season, VakifBank Istanbul produced a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat Numia Vero Volley Milano 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11) in the first leg of their Women's quarterfinal on Tuesday night at the Allianz Cloud.
The 131-minute thriller had everything volleyball fans could ask for: world-class talent on both sides of the net, momentum swings, clutch performances, and a finish that left the packed Milan arena stunned into silence.
Milano came out firing from the opening whistle, driven by the explosive power of Italian national team star Paola Egonu. The 26-year-old delivered a staggering 38 points across the five sets, the highest individual tally of the match, and looked set to lead her team to a commanding first-leg advantage. Anna Danesi contributed 11 points and an impressive seven kill blocks as Milano's front line dominated the early exchanges.
The hosts edged a tense opening set 26-24 before maintaining their intensity to take the second 25-22, putting VakifBank on the brink of a demoralizing away defeat. The Turkish side appeared rattled, struggling to find answers to Milano's relentless attacking and organized blocking, which produced 71 winning spikes and a wall of resistance at the net.
But VakifBank, one of the most decorated clubs in European volleyball history, refused to fold. The turning point came at the start of the third set, when Russian-born outside hitter Marina Markova began to take control of proceedings. Markova, who would finish the night with 36 points and the match MVP award, found her rhythm with a series of thunderous spikes that shifted the momentum decisively.
Alongside her, Serbian superstar Tijana Boskovic rediscovered her best form, contributing 20 points as VakifBank's offensive machine roared to life. French international Helena Cazaute added 19 points of her own, giving the Istanbul side three dominant scoring threats that Milano simply could not contain.
VakifBank claimed the third set 25-22, sparking belief that a comeback was possible. They repeated the exact same scoreline in the fourth set, leveling the match and sending the contest to a decisive fifth set. By this point, the momentum had swung entirely in the Turkish club's favor, and the visitors carried their confidence into the tiebreak.
In the shortened fifth set, VakifBank were clinical. They raced to an early lead and never looked back, closing out the match 15-11 to complete one of the great comebacks of the Champions League season. The Istanbul side finished with 79 winning spikes and 12 blocks across the contest.
Markova was visibly emotional after the match. "After losing the first two sets we stayed calm, trusted our system and fought for every ball," she said. "This team has incredible character and we showed it tonight."
The result gives VakifBank a significant psychological advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played next week in Istanbul on March 19. Milano will need to produce another inspired performance on hostile territory if they are to overturn the deficit and reach the Final Four, which is scheduled for May in Istanbul.
For VakifBank, the victory underlines their credentials as serious contenders for the Champions League title this season. With Markova, Boskovic, and Cazaute all firing, the Turkish powerhouse will be a formidable opponent for any team remaining in the competition.
