In a moment that will be etched in Finnish sports history, Sami Valimaki became the first golfer from Finland to capture a PGA Tour title when he claimed victory at the RSM Classic on Sunday, November 23, 2025. The 27-year-old from Nokia, Finland, closed with a four-under-par 66 to finish at 23-under for the tournament, holding off American Max McGreevy by a single stroke at Sea Island Golf Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Valimaki's winning total of 259 came on the strength of stellar rounds of 66-62-65-66 across the Seaside and Plantation courses. The victory earned him $1.26 million and 500 FedExCup points, while also securing him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and a spot in the first two Signature Events of 2026.
The significance of the moment was not lost on the soft-spoken Finn. "I just wanted to show people that it's possible to win from Finland," Valimaki said after his triumph. "Of course, I want to have more golfers in Finland. If young kids or even older people want to play golf, that's better for the sport, and that's kind of my main goal."
Valimaki's journey to this historic moment is as unconventional as it is inspiring. Growing up in Finland, he initially harbored dreams of playing in the NHL, following in the footsteps of his cousin Juuso. However, his path changed when Finland selected him for its national golf team. His parents had introduced him to the sport at Nokia River Golf when he was just five years old, and that early exposure would eventually lead to greatness.
After rising to the top ten of the World Amateur Golf Rankings in 2018, Valimaki completed his mandatory military service in Finland, which included a grueling two-week stint in subzero temperatures while living in nothing but a tent. "It was minus 20, 25 degrees, of course in Celsius," he recalled of the experience that helped forge his mental toughness.
He turned professional in early 2019 and immediately made his mark, winning his pro debut on the Pro Golf Tour in Morocco. His rapid rise continued as he won four times that season, earning his DP World Tour card through Q-School. In just his sixth start on the European circuit, he captured his maiden Tour victory at the 2020 Oman Open, going on to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award.
A second DP World Tour triumph at the 2023 Qatar Masters propelled Valimaki to the PGA Tour, where he has steadily improved. His victory at the RSM Classic marked the 17th first-time winner of the 2024-25 PGA Tour season, the second-highest total in a single season since 1983.
The win also vaulted Valimaki to a career-best 40th in the Official World Golf Ranking, putting him in position to qualify for his first Masters if he finishes inside the top 50 at year's end. Having already secured spots in the PGA Championship and RBC Heritage, the Finnish trailblazer's best days may still lie ahead.
For a nation better known for producing hockey stars and ski jumpers, Valimaki has opened a new chapter in Finnish sporting achievement, proving that even from the frozen north, golf dreams can become reality.
