LOS ANGELES -- The 2026 Genesis Invitational delivered drama and dazzling golf through its first two rounds at the iconic Riviera Country Club, with Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman emerging as co-leaders at 12-under par after each carding brilliant 64s in Friday's second round.
But perhaps the most compelling storyline belongs to Rory McIlroy, who sits just one shot off the pace at 11-under and appears primed for another big week. The Northern Irishman, fresh off his victory at the Players Championship just days earlier, opened the Genesis with a 5-under 66 on Thursday -- his lowest-ever opening round at Riviera -- and kept the momentum rolling on Friday.
McIlroy's first round was a masterclass in adaptability. He burst out of the gates with three birdies in his first four holes before heavy rain forced a three-hour suspension of play on Thursday afternoon. When the players returned, they faced a rare and demanding combination of surfaces that were simultaneously soft and lightning quick, accompanied by cold, gusting winds. McIlroy handled it all with six birdies against just one bogey.
"I've started to just really enjoy this style of golf," McIlroy said after his round. "If you had asked me 10 years ago, I didn't enjoy these conditions, but it's been a shift in mindset."
Friday offered a welcome reprieve. Clear skies and calm conditions allowed the field to attack Riviera's famed layout, and nobody took greater advantage than Penge and Bridgeman. Both players navigated the par-71 track with precision and confidence, posting matching 7-under 64s to vault to the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend.
Xander Schauffele was another standout performer on Friday. After completing his weather-delayed first round early in the morning with a 3-under 68, Schauffele had just a 38-minute turnaround before teeing off for Round 2. The quick transition did not faze him -- he responded with a superb 6-under 65 to reach 9-under for the tournament, tied with veteran Adam Scott.
Max Greyserman and Min Woo Lee also positioned themselves within striking distance at 8-under, while Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Wyndham Clark, and Kurt Kitayama formed a dangerous pack at 7-under.
The biggest surprise, however, came at the other end of the leaderboard. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who entered the week as the clear betting favorite at plus-300 odds, endured a nightmare opening round. He needed three putts for par on the easy first-hole par 5 and never found his rhythm. The defending FedExCup champion had to scramble on Friday just to survive, needing a birdie on the par-5 17th and a gutsy six-foot par save on 18 to squeeze inside the cut line at even par -- a full 12 shots behind the leaders.
The cut fell at even par, with 51 players advancing to the weekend at this Signature Event, which features a $20 million purse. Saturday's third round will air on Golf Channel beginning at 1 p.m. ET before coverage shifts to CBS at 3 p.m. ET.
With McIlroy riding a wave of confidence and two relatively unheralded co-leaders setting the pace, the weekend at Riviera promises to deliver the kind of compelling theater that has made this tournament one of the most anticipated stops on the PGA Tour calendar.
