In a match that will be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in SEC volleyball history, the Kentucky Wildcats staged a remarkable reverse sweep to defeat the Texas Longhorns 3-2 and claim the 2025 Allstate SEC Volleyball Tournament Championship on Tuesday, November 25, at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia.
The victory was particularly sweet for Kentucky, as it came in the first SEC volleyball tournament since 2005, marking the event's return after a 20-year hiatus. The Wildcats, who entered the match as the top-ranked team in the conference with a perfect 15-0 regular season record, found themselves in deep trouble early against a determined Texas squad.
Texas came out firing, taking the first two sets 25-19 and 28-26, putting the Longhorns within striking distance of an upset victory. The turning point came in the third set when Texas held championship point at 24-21, seemingly on the verge of completing the sweep. However, Kentucky demonstrated the resilience that has defined their season, winning six of the next seven points to steal the set 26-24 and breathe life back into their championship hopes.
From that moment forward, it was all Wildcats. Kentucky carried the momentum into the fourth set, winning 25-22 to force a decisive fifth frame. In the final set, Texas jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Kentucky responded with a dominant 6-1 run to take control at 6-3. After the Longhorns battled back to tie the match at 8-8, the Wildcats found another gear, closing the match on an emphatic 6-0 scoring run to win the fifth set 15-9 and secure the championship.
SEC Player of the Year Eva Hudson was nothing short of spectacular in the victory, recording 25 kills on 70 swings with a .300 hitting percentage while adding 11 digs for an impressive double-double. Her kill on the final point put an exclamation mark on what has been a dominant campaign for the standout player.
Hudson received plenty of support from her teammates. Lizzie Carr and Brooklyn DeLeye each contributed 13 kills, while Asia Thigpen was a model of efficiency with 10 kills on zero errors for a remarkable .500 hitting percentage, adding four crucial blocks. Setter Kassie O'Brien orchestrated the offense brilliantly, recording a career-high 56 assists.
The championship represents the sixth in Kentucky program history and first since 1988, adding another chapter to an already storied season. The Wildcats improved to 24-2 overall while Texas fell to 23-3, though both programs are expected to receive high seeds when the NCAA Tournament bracket is unveiled on Sunday, November 30.
For Kentucky, this reverse sweep was their second of the 2025 season and caps an undefeated run through SEC play. The Wildcats had already swept Texas during the regular season, making their tournament comeback even more impressive given the Longhorns knew exactly what to expect.
As the NCAA Tournament approaches, Kentucky has proven they possess not only the talent but the mental fortitude to compete for a national championship. Their ability to rally from the brink of defeat against one of the nation's elite programs sends a clear message to the rest of the field: count out the Wildcats at your own peril.
